Hunter Army Airfield Highlights - Things to do with kids

Beaches

Tybee Island, GA

One of our favorite things about being stationed at HAAF was living right next to the beach. Tybee is about a 20-minute drive from HAAF. Click here to read my full post about Tybee.

Hilton Head, SC

The second closest beach to HAAF is Hilton Head, SC at an 1-1.5-hour drive depending on which route you take.

Jacksonville, FL

Jacksonville Beach, FL is the next closest at just under a 2-hour drive.

Places

Kids Museum - Pooler, GA

Pooler is about a 20-minute drive from HAAF with lots of shopping and eateries. The Kid’s Museum is attached to the Tanger Outlets, so it’s a great pit stop or reward after a long day of shopping with your kids!

Jacksonville Zoo - Jacksonville, FL

Jacksonville Zoo is less than a 2 hour drive from HAAF. It makes a great day trip or weekend get away. See my full post here about the zoo!

Downtown Savannah

While there’s not a lot I would recommend in Downtown Savannah for kids, watching the container ships pass through is always a winner. There’s conveniently an ice cream shop on this strip too.

Oatland Island Wildlife Center of Savannah - Savannah, GA

Oatland is located between downtown Savannah and Tybee Island. Lots of animals to view and learn about, it’s almost like a mini zoo itself.
*You must purchase tickets/time slot to visit ahead of time you cannot just arrive and walk in

Splash in the Boro - Statesboro, GA

Statesboro is about an hour away from HAAF. While mostly a college town, they have a fantastic water park that I wish we had gone too more. Lazy river, slides, kids’ area, cabanas, they have it all!

Exhilarate the Adventure Zone - Savannah, GA

Exhilarate is an indoor play area for kids, with stuff to do for ALL age from toddlers to teens. We would go here on especially hot days and for birthday parties.

J F Gregory City Park - Richmond Hill, GA

While stationed at HAAF we lived in Richmond Hill, a 20-minute drive from HAAF where J F Gregory Park is located. In addition to the playground they have lots of walking/running paths, a gazebo to feed the turtles, and an indoor place for the occasional town market.

Seasonal

Poppell Farms - Odum, GA

Poppell Farms is 1.5 hours from HAAF, but well worth the drive. If you only have time to do one pumpkin patch while stationed at HAAF this is the one. Included in the price is a hayride to pick out a small pumpkin (pictured to the left), and a range of kid’s activities from pony rides to kids jump areas. They also have food on site that was really good.

Madrac Farms - Rincon, GA

Madrac Farms is about 45 minutes from HAAF. We enjoyed Madrac just as much as Poppell, I would just say it’s a little smaller in size and not as many activities in comparison. If you have smaller kids this may be the better option for you.

Holiday Lights at Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens - Savannah, GA

The drive through lights at the botanical gardens is a must at Christmas time. Fit as many people as you can into a car for $15 and enjoy! Takes about 15-20 minutes to drive through, depending on the pace of the cars in front of you. My 3-year-old was in awe the entire drive, and Santa and Mrs. Claus are at the end to say goodbye.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade - Downtown Savannah, GA

If your family is stationed at HAAF, Ft. Stewart, or Tybee there is a good chance your service member will be marching in the St. Patrick’s Day parade. It’s truly an event you can’t pass up. As tradition goes, bring your red lipstick to kiss your service member on the cheek as they go by!
